'One pill can kill.' The four words are plastered on posters in school hallways and classrooms across North Texas, raising awareness of the dangers of fentanyl. 'If you think that fentanyl is not going to get to your school, you're wrong,' Leigha Simonton, U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Texas, told more than 300 school leaders during two virtual forums in early August. Over the past year in North Texas, fentanyl killed at least four students and hospitalized at least 10 others. From 2019 to 2020, overdose deaths nearly doubled for 14- to 18-year-olds nationwide.
